Video shows Ukrainian Su-27 hitting road sign during highway landing exercise

The fighter jet miscalculated the landing point and almost landed on the head of people and police cars. The Su-27 fighter also knocked down a road sign during landing, which could lead to a fatal crash.

Taken on Aug. 27, 2020 the curious video in this post features which was published by numerous witnesses on social media, a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker fighter jet landing on what is known as Highway M06, a Ukrainian international highway connecting Kyiv to the Hungarian border near Chop.

According to Defence Blog, the fighter jet miscalculated the landing point and almost landed on the head of people and police cars. The Su-27 fighter also knocked down a road sign during landing, which could lead to a fatal crash.

Noteworthy the drill saw two Su-27 fighter jets practicing for rough landings on improvised runways, as a part of trials to use roads for emergency landings and to demonstrate the capability to swiftly assemble air power to counter any threat.

Ukrainian Air Force has 70 Su-27s in inventory with 34 of them in service as of March 2019.

The Sukhoi Su-27 heavy air superiority fighter – codenamed ‘Flanker’ by NATO – was designed during the Cold War as a Soviet counter to potential Western opponents such as the US Air Force’s F-15 Eagle.

In the post-Soviet era, the original Su-27 series has continued to equip the Russian armed forces, and carried on serving with the Ukrainian Air Force as well as other former Soviet states and several export customers.
