Video shows Italian voice double of Tom Cruise flying a jet prior to recording Top Gun: Maverick

‘We made a video with the Italian voice of Tom Cruise, Roberto Chevalier. He flew in one of our jets to “prepare” for his role in Top Gun: Maverick,’ Philipp Schaer, MiGFlug’s founder.

The interesting video in this post features Italian actor Roberto Chevalier, best known for providing the Italian voice of Tom Cruise in most of his movies, flying aboard one of MiGFlug’s jets before recording Top Gun: Maverick.

‘We made a video with the Italian voice of Tom Cruise, Roberto Chevalier. He flew in one of our jets to “prepare” for his role in Top Gun,’ Philipp Schaer, one of the company founders, told to The Aviation Geek Club.

Unlike the actor, a voice double usually doesn’t take part in the action on a set… and in Roberto’s case — on a jet. But how can his voice take the role of a fighter pilot without ever having experienced the real thing?

Because MiGFlug’s raison d’être is to realize people’s dream to fly a jet, Roberto Chevalier got offered a front row seat on one of its jets. Look at it as Method Acting where an actor inhabits the role of his character to encourage sincere performances…

Boarding an L-39 Albatros Jet, Roberto took off for a dazzling 45 minute flight in the sensational scenery of the Swiss Alps. Together with his pilot, he was in for loops, rolls, spins and a flyby above and around the Matterhorn.

Roberto’s maiden flight was documented and resulted in the short-film-documentary below. The film is carried by his voice and it talks of a dream to finally catch up with the skies. Ironically this time it was his voice that stayed grounded as the whole experience made the actor speechless while he was at it.

MiGFlug is Switzerland based aviation and space adventure company specialized in supersonic flights, edge of space flights, zero gravity flights and suborbital space flights. Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 classic puts Pete “Maverick” Mitchell back in the cockpit to train a new group of young aviators. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

The original Top Gun featured the iconic F-14 Tomcat, the nimble A-4 Skyhawk and the famed, black painted MiG-28 that never actually existed: in fact the part of the MiG-28 was played by the F-5E Tiger II.

As we have already explained in a previous, extensive piece, this time, Maverick and the rest of the Navy crew in “Top Gun: Maverick” will fly F/A-18 Super Hornets and they will face an actual foreign aircraft: the Sukhoi Su-57 (NATO reporting name Felon).

Other aircraft featured in the movie are F-35C Lightning II, the Darkstar (aka SR-72 Son of Blackbird) and Tom Cruise’s personally-owned P-51K Mustang.

Top Gun: Maverick also features the comeback of the legendary Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the real star of the first film.
