The internet was set ablaze on Mar. 29, 2022 when the new (and possibly final) trailer of Top Gun: Maverick debuted.

In fact, nearly three years after its unveiling, Top Gun: Maverick finally seems to have a stable release date: May 27, 2022.

As shown in the latest trailer, Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell must gain the courage to face Miles Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Bradley, who goes by the call sign Rooster, is the son of Nick Bradshaw, a.k.a. Goose, Maverick’s former Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) who died in the first movie after a competitive training mission went wrong.

After one brief peek at a physical altercation, Bradshaw offers a brutal rejoinder: “My dad believed in you. I’m not gonna make the same mistake.”

Bradley is now all grown up in the trailer for the sequel, and he’s not warming up to Maverick, even as the rebellious flyer now finds himself training a new generation of TOPGUN graduates for a mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen.

If Rooster is his own man, there’s an immediate link to his fallen father with one look at his face: the moustache has been passed down a generation. “That was something I knew for sure had to be in there,” Teller says to Empire. “And there are some nods to Goose in the movie which I think people will be very appreciative of.”

Not only did Teller grow his own facial fuzz – but he picked out his own callsign too, after spending some time thinking what Goose’s son might name himself. “I thought it sounded like it was in the same family,” he says. “I thought it was cool, and I got the seal of approval from Tom.”

Will Rooster ever forgive Maverick for the fateful event that took his father’s life? Hard to say. But Maverick wants to make one thing clear: “I’m not a teacher. Just want to manage expectations.”
