Argentina is eyeing Korea’s offer for ten KAI FA-50 light combat aircraft. Talks on high government level are being held in secrecy.

Argentina could soon buy Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50 light attack aircraft. In fact since the country is still looking for a new fighter aircraft and technical and financial issues faced with previous attempts, Argentina is eyeing Korea’s offer for ten KAI FA-50 light combat aircraft.

According to Scramble Facebook News Magazine, talks on high government level are being held in secrecy. Two aircraft should even arrive this year already, with the remainder next year. The USD 200 million deal would be paid of in ten years; basically a loan or credit line is needed. With a total external debt of over USD 275.000 million, it is difficult for Argentina to get such a deal financed. Also the next Argentinian president (or even the Air Force) may not agree.

As already reported, on May 13, 2019 Argentina received five former French Navy Super Étendard Modernisé (SEM) attack aircraft, which were purchased by the Argentine government in 2018.

The five SEMs, together pricetagged USD 15 million (USD 3 million each), are destined for the Comando de Aviación Naval’s EA32 (2 Escuadrilla Aeronaval de Caza y Ataque of the 3 Escuadra Aeronaval).

The Super Étendard Modernisé attack aircraft have been presented in an official ceremony on May 13, 2019.

Noteworthy it will take a while before these aircraft will be up in Argentine skies, as the country first needs to invest a total amount of USD 5 million in a modernization programme.

Lastly, however capable the FA-50 or Super Étendard Modernisé may be, it is not designed as an air defence fighter… That being said, neither is the A-4AR Fightinghawk or IA-63 Pampa now in use.
